Comments:

The Malaysian Serama is the smallest and lightest bantam chicken in the world and highly prized as a living work of art. Serama's are divided into grades, according to their size. Grade A weigh less than 350 grams and should be no more than 7.5 inches in height full grown for a male and 5.5 inches for a female. Grade B is the recommended size to breed sizes coming in from 350 to 500 grams. There are also class C and D as well. You can obtain A sized Serama's from B sized parents.

The Serama's make a beautiful pet and companion, both indoors and outdoors. A trio of class A can be housed in a 24 x 18 inch enclosure. The Serama's are not your "every day barn yard bantam" . Coming from the Malaysian jungles where temperatures average 90 to 110 degrees. The Serama's can get stressed when temperatures drop below 40 degree's, but kept indoors in a well lighted area and given a sourse of heat ( a 75 degree light bulb in each cage) , something that the can move to or away from as the need arises. The Serama's will usually thrive in these conditions. They are no differant to raise than any other quality bantam.

Malaysian Serama's come in all colors and do not breed true to one color. Serama's eat regular chicken food, a 50/50 mixture of game bird feed and chicken crumbles is recommended. If you are interested in Malaysian Serama's please contact us for information and their availabilty.

Cochin Bantam

Animal Description: The Bantam Cochin is also know as the Pekin. They are orginally from China, but have gained popularity throughout the world as an ornamental (pet) fowl.

A vigorous chicken, the Bantam Cochin is most highly valued as an energetic chicken. They are also excellent brooders and can be good egg layers. Many people keep Bantam Cochins as pets. Bantam Chochins are sometimes used as a foster mother for other breeds because of their excellant mothering skills.

Bantam Cochins are moderately sized chickens. Their impressive plumage makes them appear much larger than they actually are. Cocks weigh about 30 ounces and hens 26 ounces. They have a single, moderately sized comb that stands upright on the head. Their beak is short and curves to a point. The Bantam Cochin's face is very delicate and set in a short head. The entire body of the Bantam Cochin, including its feet and legs, are covered in a dense, soft plumage. Bantam Cochins come in as many as 14 different color variations, though not all are accepted in the show ring.

The Bantam Cochin was first exported from China to England and North America in the mid 19th century. Its name at the time of exportation was the Chinese Shanghal, which later changed to Bantam Cochin or Pekin, the name it still goes by in England. They were amazingly popular in the late 19th century and are still popular today, primarily as an ornamental bird.

Specific Care Information: Cochins are relatively east to care for and make wonderful pets. They require little space and are usually quite docile. They need fresh grass, commercial chicken feed, scratch, and scraps to eat. They need a coop to sleep and lay eggs in with a door closed at night to keep raccons and other animals won't get them. The wire needs to be so close together that a raccon can't get it's arm in and pull a chicken to the wire and eat it. Fresh straw is good for nesting and free range if other animals can't injure them.
